NEWS UPDATE: Mintie Equipment used to protect hospital air quality during Wildfire

Mintie Commended for Equipment Effectiveness in combating Wildfire Smoke and Contaminants Nov 19, 2008 The County of Orange Health Care Agency, Health Disaster Management EMS, commended Mintie Director of Sales Tom Aoki for product effectiveness and his help in preventing smoke and airborne contaminants from penetrating hospitals. Early Saturday, Nov 15th the Corona, CA fire broke out as part of wildfires that burned large parts of Southern California. By mid afternoon strong winds had been allowing significant amounts of smoke to penetrate the building whenever patients, staff or well wishers used the main doors. This created a serious health concern and raised false alarms over building safety.  "A couple of our hospitals were overcome by smoke (penetration at doors) … Tom was able to overcome this issue with one of the ECU and two of the blowers (HEPA filtered Negative Air Machines). His ability to solve this issue was truly impressive." Mike Steinkraus, EMS Coordinator, Emergency & Disaster Program, Gregory L. Boswell, RN, Program Manager Samuel J. Stratton, MD, MPH, Medical Director Mintie ECU2 with corridor flange during the fires.

Saturday, November 15th The Corona fire broke out at 8:55 am in Southern California. The wildfire both created particulates directly and updrafts which pulled additional material into the air. Health hazards include smoke, spore, oily and other compounds. This pollutant laden air was penetrating two local hospitals through the HVAC systems and hospital entrances where strong gusts overcame positive building pressure.  The Orange County EMS director called Tom Aoki, Mintie Director of Sales, at 2:54 pm to ask for activated charcoal filters for the HVAC air handlers and assistance setting up Mintie equipment. The charcoal filters dramatically slow the air handling capacity of the HVAC, which is often turned down or shut off to prevent smoke penetration. Unfortunately both actions are likely to reduce the positive pressure of the building, making penetration at entrances more problematic.  Pandemic Preparedness equipment purchased from Mintie for converting a ward into a mass isolation/cohorting space was stored on site. By using the ECU2 as an anteroom and connecting the Corridor Flange, a separation point was established 15" from the main entrance. Two Negative Air Machines normally used to create negative pressure isolation were stacked and their exhaust channeled into the 15" space. This significantly increased the positive pressure at the hospital entrance, preventing contaminated air from penetrating the hospital as people entered and exited.

In 2007 Mintie Corporation of Scandinavia (MCS) increased sales 230%. This growth is largely due to the commitment made by Color Line Marine Headquartered in Sandefjord, Norway. Color Line carries passenger and car/cargo vehicles to and from Norway, Denmark, Sweden & Germany with 8 different ships and 4 routes that are overnight journeys.   Color Line has implemented a new indoor air quality standard which will improve the comfort and safety of both passengers and crew. MCS worked diligently with Color Line to coordinate the approval of the chief engineers and management group over the past 5 years for the necessary servicing. In 2008 MCS will implement and perform Phase 1 cleaning of the entire exhaust ductwork systems on 3 ships. This will require 3-man crews for each ship from January to May over the next 3 to 5 years.  MCS will also service the kitchens grease exhaust ductwork systems with our "Dry Ice Blasting" (DIB) method. This proprietary method of cleaning is used in conjunction with conventional manual cleaning practices for significantly improved results. Currently MCS has over 75 annual contracts which include Dry Ice Blasting.  MCS is also proud to announce that the Hurtigruten Cruise Line is now part of our International Cruise customers. January 2008 will see us perform our first project for the MS Midtnatsol which cruises up & down the Norwegian coast line. The Hurtigruten fleet is 11 ships strong and travels to both ends of the world with cruises to the Antarctic and Artic circles as well as Greenland. This project is a direct result of positive "word of mouth" between chief engineers regarding our success on Color Line.  In 2008 MCS will continue to focus on International Ferry/Cruise lines, but will also leverage leanings from Mintie Corporate in North America to pursue the hospital/health care arena.
